Watson Hall, Room 517
Notes from a Biscuit Tin is a year-long celebration of Mary Midgley ¹ú²ú´«Ã½ ’s philosophical vision. On what would have been Mary ¹ú²ú´«Ã½ ’s 100th birthday, her biscuit tin (gifted to Rachael Wiseman and Clare Mac Cumhaill by her family after her death) will begin a 12-month round-the-world voyage. From this tin Mary dispensed wit, wisdom and ginger snaps to her visitors over many decades. At twelve stops a poet and a philosopher will meet to share a conversation on a theme from Midgley ¹ú²ú´«Ã½ ’s work. The conversation will begin with the poet reading a commissioned poem on the theme.
Poet Helen Humphreys and philosopher Christine Sypnowich will be participating in a special session of the Queen ¹ú²ú´«Ã½ ’s Department of Philosophy weekly colloquium series to welcome the biscuit tin to Kingston, its only stop in Canada. They will be discussing the theme of Children within Midgley ¹ú²ú´«Ã½ ’s work. Biscuits/cookies will be provided! The event is free, open to the public and no tickets are required.
